The reason was a national frenzy regarding maritime popular music \u2013 primarily, songs about Swedish sailors and their adventures in exotic faraway lands. Throughout the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and continuing into the 1950s, numerous Swedish composers, singers and musicians produced hundreds of sailor songs. Their commercial success was staggering, to the delight of Sweden\u2019s developing music industry, but the identitarian consequences were even more astonish- ing. Maritime national identities flourished as Swedishness itself changed drastically via this huge exposure to sailor songs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Studien visar hur svensk nationalism f\u00f6r\u00e4ndrades av dundersucc\u00e9n f\u00f6r popul\u00e4rkulturella sj\u00f6mansvisor, fr\u00e4mst representerade av &#8221;nationalskalden&#8221; Evert Taube. Men \u00e4ven via artister som Lasse Dahlqvist,&nbsp;Harry Brandelius, \u00c5ke Gr\u00f6nberg, Carl Jularbo, Gunde Johansson, Johnny Bode, G\u00f6sta Jonsson, Jussi Bj\u00f6rling, Karin Juel, Sickan Carlsson, Alice Babs, Lisbeth Bodin, Elisabeth &#8221;Bullan&#8221; Weijden och Monica Zetterlund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&nbsp;&#8221;Swedish sailor songs, popular culture, and maritime national identities 1918\u20131960\u201d&nbsp;visar jag hur dessa sj\u00f6mansvisor hade en enorm effekt p\u00e5 hur svenskhet uppfattas. Svensk nationalism f\u00f6r\u00e4ndrades i grunden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fram till 1918 hade &#8221;den svenska nationen&#8221; symboliserats av inlandet, framf\u00f6r allt landskapet Dalarna.
